Comparison of Stretch Reflex Torques in Ankle Dorsiflexors and Plantarflexors
نویسندگان
چکیده
This study compared the intrinsic and reflex torques generated in response to position perturbations in tibialis anterior (TA) and gastrocnemius (GS) ankle muscles. Pulse, step, and a combination of random perturbation and step inputs were used to identify the reflex and intrinsic contributions to the measured torque. TA reflex torques were very small whereas GS reflex torques were substantial.

The Tardieu Scale differentiates contracture from spasticity whereas the Ashworth Scale is confounded by it.
OBJECTIVE To compare the Tardieu Scale as a clinical measure of spasticity after stroke with the Ashworth Scale. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS Sixteen people, living in the community three years after their stroke. MAIN MEASURES The Ashworth Scale and Tardieu Scale as well as laboratory measures of spasticity (stretch-induced electromyographic (EMG) activity) and contracture ...
متن کاملFunctional electrical stimulation of ankle plantarflexor and dorsiflexor muscles: effects on poststroke gait.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is a popular poststroke gait rehabilitation intervention. Although stroke causes multijoint gait deficits, FES is commonly used only for the correction of swing-phase foot drop. Ankle plantarflexor muscles play an important role during gait. The aim of the current study was to test the immediate effects of delivering FES to both ank...
متن کاملModulation of stretch reflexes during imposed walking movements of the human ankle.
Our overall objectives were to examine the role of peripheral afferents from the ankle in modulating stretch reflexes during imposed walking movements and to assess the mechanical consequences of this reflex activity. Specifically we sought to define the changes in the electromyographic (EMG) and mechanical responses to a stretch as a function of the phase of the step cycle. We recorded the ank...
متن کاملSimultaneous characterizations of reflex and nonreflex dynamic and static changes in spastic hemiparesis.
This study characterizes tonic and phasic stretch reflex and stiffness and viscosity changes associated with spastic hemiparesis. Perturbations were applied to the ankle of 27 hemiparetic and 36 healthy subjects under relaxed or active contracting conditions. A nonlinear delay differential equation model characterized phasic and tonic stretch reflex gains, elastic stiffness, and viscous damping...
متن کاملEffects of ankle fatigue on functional reflex activity during gait perturbations in young and elderly men.
There is growing evidence that aging and muscle fatigue result in impaired postural reflexes in humans. Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine the effects of ankle fatigue on functional reflex activity (FRA) during gait perturbations in young and elderly men. Twenty-eight young (27.0+/-3.1 years, n=14) and old (67.2+/-3.7 years, n=14) healthy active men participated in this study...
